Where do mantras come from?

We do not know exactly where mantras come from. We just know that they were passed to us by the teachers of antiquity. They practiced mantras themselves, achieved some extraordinary results and at a later stage passed these mantras to us. The message from yoga teachers was that we should work with our voice. The more we succeed in this practice, the more we succeed in all spheres of life, both of physical and spiritual nature. The fact that we do not realize the power of our speech shows that the degree of impurity of our mind is still very high. However, if we work in this direction, trusting yoga teachers, eventually, we will overcome the impurities and realize the immense power of our voices.

The world from the perspective of mantra yoga

The whole world that we see around us is a vibration. The whole world is a mantra! Any subject, that we see, is a piece of this mantra. One total vibration created the whole world, which means that the primordial vibration Om split into pieces, as letters of the alphabet, and they started to pair in various combinations. Just like any word is a combination of letters of the alphabet, any subject or event is the combination of some vibrations. If we learn to generate and reproduce these vibrations, we will be able to create and destroy things or events, which is a sheer materialization.
To a certain degree, we also represent a vibration ourselves. Our bodies are a vibration, and if this vibration is tuned, we feel very well. But if it is dissonant, we feel pain and frustration.
For example, if you play an old piano that is falling apart, you will hear sounds, that you do not expect to hear. To fix the piano, you should call the master. He will tune every string, and finally the melody will become tuned and nice. The same thing happens to our body. If it is dissonant and dissembles, we can apply special mantras. There is a large number of mantras, for example, healing mantras. If we start pronouncing them correctly, trying to awake them persistently and doing it for a long time, then, roughly speaking, all the strings of our body and soul come to resonance and get back to harmony. That is the great healing effect of mantra.

Mantras and religion

There is a very strict rule in yoga, “Yoga doesn’t interfere with religion, medicine and science”. At the same time yoga is not against religion, yoga is for religion if it helps people. However, yoga is a system of self-exploration, it is based on principles that do not conflict with religion, and at the same time do not depend on it. A person of any religion can practice yoga as well as any atheist. Yoga helps everyone.
We can compare yoga and religion, prayer and mantra, but that is a very delicate topic. We touch the deepest persons’ feelings, and we can insult the reader by any inappropriate word. So, that is why we just say, that mantra yoga is not down to religion, but the awareness of the underlying principles of its structure can help to achieve the results quicker, including those of prayers.
Some religious elements, the names of Gods are present in mantra yoga, because over time it became saturated with cultural traditions of the country where it was stored. When mantra yoga as such comes to the West, people tend to perceive it as worship of other gods, as a religious cult, and it is rather off-putting. Mantra yoga is not confined only to the names of Hindu deities, which can confuse the representatives of other religions.
There are indeed mantras of names in mantra yoga, but there are also mantras of energy and consciousness, bija mantras. Bija mantras cannot be translated; these are such mantras which are not related to religion. It means that every person regardless of religious beliefs can use this system and benefit from its results.

What kind of mantras do we know?

There are the following categories of mantras: mantras of energy, mantras of consciousness, and mantras of names. Also, mantras can be divided into mantras of aims and mantras of actions: mental, material, mental-material, mantras of direct action, and mantras with protection.
Mantras of energy produce objects and events: they increase the energy level. The most important in these mantras is to reproduce letters, intonation, accent; they cannot be translated.
Mantras of consciousness expand consciousness, tune it up, and the meaning of the mantra matters the most. These mantras can be translated from one language to another. For example, one of the popular mantras is the mantra of consciousness Aham Brahman, which is translated as ‘I am Brahman’. The word ‘Brahman’ means the total Absolute, the origin of the Universe. When someone is practicing these mantras the most important thing is to understand the meaning, the sense, the translation of it. It is not important what language is used to pronounce it.
Mantras of names work as both mantras of energy and as mantras of consciousness. These mantras produce an effect, they have meaning and they are the simplest and the fastest in action.
For example, one of the most famous mantras is Maha Mantra.
Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna,
Krishna, Krishna, Hare, Hare,
Hare Rama, Hare Rama,
Rama, Rama, Hare, Hare.
If we analyze this mantra, it becomes clear, that it contains the names of quite specific characters: Krishna and Rama.
According to Indian mythology, once, Absolute decided to come down to the Earth. He turned into a young man named Krishna. He did many useful things during his life, and displayed many good features. From mantra yoga point of view, if you start to repeat this name or call yourself by one of them, you will get the same features as Krishna had. It is for this reason that there are spiritual names.

Mental and material mantras

According to the Indian philosophy there are four aims of life. The first three aims are materialistic: good food, good sleep, be resourceful, find your place under the sun and enjoy it.
The fourth aim of being is the aspiration for the spiritual knowledge, when we realize that there is something beyond the limits, something higher, and we aspire to understand it.
Each period of human life has a different mission. When we are young, we are strong and sharp; we want to eat, to find our place in this life, to succeed in our objectives. It is meaningless to tell us about life’s philosophy or spirituality at this time in our life. We will not become satisfied with this information. Eventually we start questioning what happens at the end of life, what are the universal rules? During this period of life, we mainly search for answers to these questions rather than think about accumulation of wealth.
To meet the challenges arising at different periods of human life, mantra yoga is offering appropriate mantras. Some of them solve only the most urgent or immediate problems: what to eat, where to sleep, how to be healthy, wealthy, where to get knowledge from, where to find a partner. Other mantras give spiritual knowledge, understanding the laws of the Universe. By practicing them, we do not become rich, but receive spiritual knowledge – the understanding, that there is a circle of karma, that we are born and we will die, that our “Self” is not separable from Absolute, etc. When we receive this knowledge and start to understand and realize it, life changes to the better.
Everyone chooses the appropriate mantras for themselves. There are people who are engaged in purely spiritual practices, there are people who are only interested in material things. At the first glance the first seem to be so sublime, they tend toward the spiritual, and the latter seem more primitive, as they aspire to material. But in fact, both practices are acceptable. It is recommended to combine business with pleasure, when you choose mantras. If you have material wishes, for example, to buy a car, use the appropriate mantra that gives wealth. Once you are convinced that it works, one little miracle will happen – you will start believing in mantra yoga and you will start practicing it to the maximum.

Spiritual-material mantras

This section of mantras can help a person to learn spiritual through the material. They are the mostly recommended. For example, if you are an artist and you want to paint a picture to inspire the whole world, you aspire to Higher cognition. On the one hand, it is a quite tangible desire for fame and recognition; on the other hand, it is the spiritual desire. Spiritual-material mantras are devoted to those kinds of objectives, when we perceive one through another, and fulfill ourselves both materially and spiritually.
For this aim you would choose the appropriate mantra, for example, mantra of Sarasvati - the goddess of art, and start practicing it for a long time. During the process of painting, the spiritual knowledge and the beauty of the goddess Sri will be revealed to you and in addition to that, your beautiful painting would really have a strong impact on the global society and bring you a lot of money.
In any case, the most important thing is that you practice, get results and believe in mantra yoga.

Mantras of the direct action and ‘foolproof’ mantras

‘Foolproof’ mantras are widespread in the world, they constitute about 99,9% of all mantras. It is absolutely safe to practice them, because they would fail if the practitioner is threatened by any danger. They provide everything the average person needs for his or her spiritual development and a happy life. These mantras can vary according to the degree of action. Some are fuzzier, others are more concentrated. As you see, the mercantile mantras, which give you material wealth and prosperity, will not care about your spiritual development. In the same way as spiritual, mantras are so structured that they will not care about your physical growth. That is why everyone should choose the most appropriate mantra to work with.
Mantras of the direct action are virtually unknown to the public. These mantras will be effective regardless of whether there is a threat for you or not. They are very rarely required. They are like a nuclear bomb. Their existence suggests that nobody should use them, except in very rare, justifiable cases. It is the same in yoga, there is a huge range of resources which help to deal with very serious problems. But God forbid anybody to use them!
There is a myth, that maya or bad karma will be triggered and start to cause harm, and this harm should be removed or stopped. And just for this one occasion of the four hundred billion these mantras are needed.
In all yoga sources, you can find universal ‘foolproof’ mantras. In the worst case, they simply will not work, in the best, you will use them, realize them in full, and get all imaginable and unimaginable results. So, after you have realized, that mantra yoga is not a fiction, see for yourself that it is effective by getting your own experience. If you have a problem, you can start with mixed mantras, which consist of the elements of energy, consciousness and mantras of names, in particular, Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra, Gayatri Mantra and others; there are lots of them. They are in the category of mantras, which harmonically combine the element of consciousness, the element of energy and the element of name.

Mantra of our name

Each of us has a name, which we got at birth. Whether we like it or not, but the vibration of our name affects us, imposes its own characteristics, and in varying degrees, restricts or extends our manifestation in this Universe. Taking a name works by the principle, ‘The way you name the boat - that way it will sail!’ That’s why there are spiritual names in yoga that people can choose to acquire some qualities or abilities. That’s how mantra of the name works. But this concept is more complicated than our common understanding of the name.
From the point of view of mantra yoga, we differ from the entire Universe, from the Absolute, from the enlightenment, as if we were separated. We are part of this consciousness and part of this energy. We are using the consciousness and the energy of Absolute, as if we borrowed it. But what does separate us from the whole entity, from the Absolute? Mantra of the name does. There is a statement in yoga, ‘If someone or something does not have the name – it does not exist.’ Think about it! If you cannot name something – it does not exist.
But there is one thing, which we cannot name, that is our ‘Self’. It is higher than the conception of words, definitions, than any qualities, so, once our ‘Self’ is called with a name, it becomes limited in its manifestation. To understand what restriction is made by our name, we should practice repeating our name. The longer we practice it, the clearer we understand the impact of our name on our destiny.
In ancient times, each name was given with the intention that a person would inherit the qualities the name contains. Every name has its own roots, attributes of a saint, character, or a famous person. These names came to us from different languages.
When we want to develop certain qualities, we choose the appropriate name, and then miracle happens. The mantra of this name has impact on us and we start to demonstrate the relevant features. The formal science can explain it by autohypnosis, but when the things begin to happen, which are higher than the concept of hypnosis, a person starts to comprehend the secret core of mantra yoga. Everything in this world is a vibration, absolutely everything. The world consists of two parts – consciousness and energy. Energy is a manifested vibration, and consciousness is a concealed vibration of our ‘Self’. That is why from mantra yoga point of view we should think what name is closer to our ‘Self’, what name we want to call ourselves. Our parents have the right to call us any name they like, but from the other side, we also have the right to call ourselves as we like. That is why the spiritual names appear, the names which people choose themselves. People may know a person as John Johnson, but he calls himself with the name, which is more intimate to him.

Tendencies in choosing mantras and their awakening

Various problems happen in our lives and for solving them, we need different mantras with certain effect. There are collections of the main mantras and one of them is called ‘Mantras for Tantra’. Tantra yoga is one of the most powerful aspects of yoga, and it is considered, that it can’t be practiced without mantra yoga. Tantra yoga gained a sexual connotation in the West, but you should understand that tantric yoga uses any energy of our body. It is considered, that we do not have two different energies, and sexual energy as any other energy is a manifestation of our one energy. There are several ways to manage it, and one of them is mantras. Different mantras for different aims are gathered in this collection. Some mantras are focused on certain purposes; others are more universal, for example, mantras of prosperity, of family’s harmony.
There are certain trends in choosing mantras. To remove obstacles in any action mantra of Ganesha is used.
To be healthy and avoid accidents, the mantra conquering the death is used - Maha Mrityunjaya mantra. There is a very powerful mantra – Gayatri mantra, which helps to reach all the aims and remove obstacles, it gives prosperity, and nothing will distract you from practicing yoga. When you start to work with mantra, to awaken it, you will clearly understand and feel what mantra you need. Sometimes yogi starts to practice one mantra and then comes to another, because it is more appropriate for the current problems. As a rule, one mantra gently leads a person to another. It is a different story, when a person changes mantras from one to another too quickly. As a result, none of them works. The problem in this approach is you lose trust in mantra yoga. It is the same as assembling a mechanism: until you bind the last detail, the engine will not work. You assemble one engine halfway – and then give up, another engine a halfway, then give up, the third, etc.
Then you think, ‘Where is a guarantee, that it works?’ That is why every successful and finished awakening of mantra increases your strength and confidence, and you will awake another mantra quicker.
Awakening of mantra can be different in its effect, depending on the purpose, that you set. The one thing is to awaken mantra and get an apartment with the sea view; the other is to attain a superconscious state. It is not even measured in apartments, it is much higher, and it is from another sphere.
On top of that, the results from practicing mantras depend on your karmic situation. Of course, if a person has a good karma, for example, he used to be a businessperson in his previous life, and he starts practicing mantra of prosperity, he will get the results quicker. Another person used to be a sponger five previous lives, and not only did not work himself, but incited others not to work, creating an environment of slovenliness. Such person will have to try to practice mantra and, furthermore, to compensate the negative karma of idleness, that is why he should work harder, also, to overcome negative tendency.
Due to the individual karmic situation of every person, it is impossible to guarantee anything.
However, sometimes very strange situations happen, when mantras work accurately with details. But there is nothing to laugh about. Because a person hardly believed, that it would work, but when it did, he was frightened by the responsibility of his actions. But in any case, there is no guarantee, only the Absolute gives guarantees.
However, I will cheer you up, if you practice mantras, it does not matter, if you understand their meaning or not, if you practice it in concentration or not, in any case – mantra works, that is the beauty of it. Mantra yoga is a very optimistic science, it says, that even if you started practicing this type of yoga out of despair there is a recipe – not that you will get it straight away on a silver platter, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel. This knowledge is a great power.

‘Foolproof’

Why doesn’t the power of words materialize, when we pronounce them? In fact, every word is a mantra. The reason is that the words, which we pronounce, are not awoken. For us, they are only the vibration of the air.
For the person, who practiced mantra yoga hard enough and for a long time and awoke mantras, the situation is completely different. As soon as this person pronounces mantras, they start working straight away. In other words, mantra will work so far, as it is awoken. Now you can imagine how powerful and magnificent this tool is.
The whole world that you see around – is a vibration. If you learn to reproduce these vibrations, you are able to produce objects and events in the Universe. If you are kind and make all efforts to help and support others, if you try to make this world better, then you have the magnificent tool in your hands! You can help a lot of people and yourself and everybody in the world. But if you are evil, mantra yoga has ‘foolproof’ tool, which defenses this science from mentally unstable people, not respecting moral and ethical principles.
The point is, since everything is quite simple - just sit and repeat mantras, the mind does not accept such methods. That is the one of the best defenses, but from the other hand, this defense sometimes does not allow people, who are already mature, to practice this method, because the mind blocks it.
To set a mission to the mind to use this method, to explain logically, why mantra yoga works, there is a complicated and verified theory.
