Kriya yoga

Besides static exercises our physical body can make some movements. Groups of cyclic movements – kriya rounds – form the base of kriya yoga.

Our body is made in such way that we are supposed to make definite number of movements. But in our way of the life we mostly spend time in a sitting position in front of a screen like ancient wise men spent time in meditation poses. This doesn’t let us get required quantity of movements during the day.

Kriya yoga is a perfect way to compensate the movements which were not made and even to make a small reserve for the next period of time. Unlike hatha yoga, the movements in kriya yoga are made in a strict sequence. As we learn the reading by studying the alphabet, there is a kind of movements’ alphabet in kriya yoga. When we have learnt it, it’s possible to make words (your own sequences). But people rarely change the sequence, even if they practice kriya yoga for a long time. The advantage of kriya yoga is that you can practice it automatically without thinking about which kriya goes next. It’s the body which remembers; probably kriyas were selected in a special sequence to make it easy to pass from one kriya to another, without requiring the attention of mind.

There it is like our inner labyrinth where it is necessary to make movement to the right, left, up and down to reach the goal. Or imagine yourself as a safe deposit and specific numbers you need to dial in order to open it. Kriya yoga is our guide through the labyrinth of our physical, subtle and causal bodies to our subconsciousness. Kriya yoga is a separate yoga as well as hatha yoga. You can study it by yourself, but an excess could occur as well. A person doesn’t always understand how the certain exercise should be done, like when studying hatha yoga.

Some people think the result will come more quickly if they move faster or raise their leg higher. It is a delusion. In kriya yoga it is considered that each person has own rhythm. Moreover, this rhythm can change from day to day. The most important aspect in kriya yoga is how harmoniously we make movements and the speed, height or flexibility does not matter. The most important thing is to catch the resonance between physical, subtle and causal bodies. If we start to feel dizziness, pain or any other negative feeling when practicing kriya yoga, we will start concentrating on these feelings and miss the fine ones. In kriya yoga the emphasis is made on the inner feelings, meaning when you practice and feel what is going on inside you. Despite the fact that of kriya yoga looks much like hatha yoga. Exactly this feeling is important. That is why it is so important to start studying kriya yoga with the instructor, at least several times in the beginning.

Dynamic meditation

Sometimes we call kriya yoga a dynamic meditation. Because the emphasis of kriya yoga is inner feelings and rhythmic movements should create a kind of a background for shifting to the inner world. In the beginning when ideas appear, we forget about the body and are concentrating on them; afterwards, if we do it in a harmonious way, ideas start disappearing and we get to the casual level, which gives sharp euphoric state. This happens because while disconnecting from the casual body we release free prana which acts like the strongest ecstatic stimulant. It is absolutely wonderful feeling, when a person gradually connects with structures and reaches its Supreme «Self» with pure prana.

One more important aspect is that kriya yoga can smoothly take us to other kinds of yoga. For some people it is too difficult to begin with hatha yoga. Last poses of kriya yoga round are in fact hatha yoga poses, and practicing kriya movements a person brings body ready for hatha yoga poses.

That is why, in some cases it makes sense to start studying yoga with kriya yoga and then continue with hatha yoga. Is kriya yoga dangerous or not? No, it is not dangerous if we trust our inner harmony and use common sense.
